Once fired, .30-06 cartridge and .308 cartridge are converted into Cross® style ball point pens with touch pad stylus compatible with the iPad, iPhone, Android, etc… These pens are real cartridges from .30-06 and .308 bullets, and the nib of the pen is acquired from a .30 caliber full metal jacket bullet. These cartridges were acquired from a recent trip to the local shooting range for target practice.
These cartridges were cleaned and polished to a bright brass shine with SimiChrome Polish, and inserts were made by hand to create our stylus bullet pens. The brass will patina with age and exposure, but the brass can easily be polished back to its original bright and shiny brass with more SimiChrome Polish or Brasso Metal Polish.
The .30-06 Springfield cartridge (pronounced “thirty-aught-six” or “thirty-oh-six”), 7.62×63mm in metric notation and called “30 Gov’t 06” by Winchester was introduced to the United States Army in 1906 and later standardized; it remained in use until the early 1970s. The “.30” refers to the caliber of the bullet, and the “06” refers to the year the cartridge was adopted—1906. The .30-06 remained the U.S. Army’s primary rifle and machine gun cartridge for nearly 50 years before being replaced by the 7.62×51mm NATO (commercial .308 Winchester) and 5.56×45mm NATO, both of which remain in current U.S. and NATO service. The .30-06 remains a very popular sporting round, with ammunition produced by all major manufacturers.
The .308 Winchester (pronounced: “three-oh-eight”) is a rimless bottlenecked rifle cartridge and is the commercial cartridge from which the 7.62×51mm NATO round was derived. The .308 Winchester was introduced in 1952, two years prior to the NATO adoption of the 7.62×51mm NATO T65. Winchester branded the cartridge and introduced it to the commercial hunting market as the .308 Winchester. Winchester’s Model 70 and Model 88 rifles were subsequently chambered for the new cartridge. Since then, the .308 Winchester has become the most popular short-action, big-game hunting cartridge worldwide. It is also commonly used for civilian target shooting, military sniping, and police sharpshooting. The relatively short case makes the .308 Winchester especially well adapted for short action rifles.
